I'm running on the beach as my first transition to bare foot running.  My first beach run was 3 miles.  Calves were fired up days after.  So for now it will be once a week till that subsides.  Maybe back off mileage just a tad for the next few times.  It's some workout running in sand, but I good transition surface.  Your feet have to find solid ground each step so it's great for building the muscles up in feet.

I found this to be better then treadmill for now.  Treadmill will be phase two.  Day hiking barefoot will be mixed in between all phases.  I'm going to focus beach work on phase one, but maybe short treadmill runs as I progress.  My ultimate goal is some local organized fun runs barefoot.  Not sure if I will be ready for that in spring we will see......

Anyone else beach running ?

Terra Plana vivo barefoot - Aqua(suede), Dharma(leather)

Paper feet sandals

I'm barefoot almost always outside of work.  I only wear shoes at work 5 days a week/6-7 hours per day.

I used to beach run occasionally before Katrina. It was a wonderful time running, but my calves would hurt no matter the distance. I might pick it back up at least once a week, once I come back from deployment.

I did some beach running in Hawaii a few weeks ago.  I felt the burn in my calves as well, but I just ran through it.  It's definitely a lot more fun than treadmill running.  It's also good too for practicing the land and lift technique.  Prior to beach running, I was notorious for the toe-off, even in my VFFs, but beach running help me correct that.
