Happy to hear you're feeling the improvement (little as that may feel right now). Keep your patient plan and before you know it, you will be looking back at this year while out on a wonderful run!

It’s been a little while since my last update. I'm getting closer to attempting a jog soon. I'm going to give it at least another two, maybe three weeks. Right now I can trot flat footed for about 75 feet before it starts to hurt. There's no way I can get up on the ball of my foot still. I need to stay on top of this and continue to challenge my foot and keep moving forward. Lots of stretching and toe/foot/ankle exercises. I'll report back after my first jog.

Oct 19th marked exactly 4 months from the time I broke my foot. Last Saturday I did a 0.25 mile easy jog in normal running shoes. I ran flat footed instead of up on the balls of my feet. The ligaments are still not quite ready for that. Spreading the weight across the entire foot enables me to jog some. I plan to do no more than two 0.25 mile jogs per week for the next 3 to 4 weeks. As long as things continue to improve, I'll slowly start adding mileage. Its been a long road, but things are really looking good now. I'll be training all Winter long - no off time for me. If all goes well, by Spring I'll be back to my old form.

I did 0.75 mile jog/walk today - it felt really good. I switched from jogging to walking every 1/8 mile. I'll give it a rest for 48 hours and see how it feels then. I think it should be fine. Looking forward to getting back to my normal routine this Winter.
As bad as I wanted to start back barefoot, its already too cold for that. I'm in my Flows and loving them. For indoor track running I'll go with my Classics.

Went for another 0.75 mile walk/jog 2 days ago. It was raining and 40F. Wind Chill was 28F. I wore my Flows and was loving every minute of it. My toes never got cold even with the Flows being completely soaked. I chose to wear shorts and the cold wind gave my skin that familar stinging feeling - I feel alive again! I felt so good I jogged the last 0.5 mile - I couldn't stop myself. Two days later - no extra pain or issues. I'm going to stick to this distance for another 2 weeks and then start increasing it slowly. I know if I stay smart and don't over do it - I'll be running 5K by early Spring.

Its been a while since an update. I'm up to running 2 miles every third day. Today was extra fun because I ran in 4 inches of fresh snow fall. This snow was very dry and fluffy like powder. The temp was 23F and almost no wind. I really enjoyed this run a lot. I just feel great now. I'll continue to take it easy and build my mileage slowly. I've came so far, I don't want any setbacks. I've got my first 5K race set for May 7th. My goal for that race is to finish in the high 20's - like 29:59. It's a far cry from flirting with breaking into the 18's as I was last summer, but its a good start. Oh, and I'm still running in my Flows - I love these things! Rgs, Jeepman

I've adjusted my running schedule. I'm putting 3 to 4 rest days between each run becausae I was starting to develop TOFP - LoL! I'll hold this schedule for 3 weeks and then start to increase again. The metatarsals were not quite ready for what I was doing. However, its good that I was able to fine the balance point and adjust for it. This will only speed up the bone mass growth and make my feet stronger that much faster. I think this is going to be a good year. Like LL Cool J says: "Don't call it a comeback! I been here for years rockin my peers and puttin suckas in fear". I know of a few people on the local 5K circuit that will not be pleased that I'm back. Rgs, Jeepman

Glad you're on the mend and getting back into things. I am also starting over after suffering a possible stress fracture in my right foot. I had plenty of rest playing Halo reach so it's time to get back out there. I'm now running in my merrell pace gloves and I really like them. I'm taking it slow this time around and not starting off with 4 mile run.

Hey Monsterbuck, thanks for the support - pos rep point for you! Are you a hunter too?
Clicked off a 15:41 two mile run today and damn did it burn so good. I've been taking it easy lately, so one barn burner should be okay. I know I'll be feeling it in my foot in the morning, but it was totally worth it. I think I'll give it another 10 to 14 days before I hit it like that again. I'll still do my easy jogs between, but be looking forward to the hard runs.

Three days from now will mark the one year anniversary of my hiking accident. I hope to celebrate it by running in my real first competitive 5K on June 25th. Two years ago I placed 3rd in this race. Last year I sat on the sidelines in my cast. I'm not sure what kind of numbers I can pull down, but anything under 28 minutes will be an achievement for me. I've had a few setbacks. My workplace laid too many people off so I've been working more than anything. I just got off a shift that had me working 25 of the last 30 days. It hasn't left much time for training. I did a 5K test run today and only managed a 27:55 for my time. Being realistic, if I can pull out a trio of 9s I'd be happy. I can't believe how much this injury has affected my times. I was in the mid 19s for a 5K right before the accident, now I'm 9 minutes slower. I'll look at it as a new set of challenges and my goal is to get back to my times before the accident.

Jeepman, Enjoy your race today and celebrate your comeback! I know it's difficult to let go of your faster times, but my experience is that you will lose enjoyment of the present moment if you hold on to the times of the past. Your times will start to fall as you are able to resume your speed work. So for now, run your own race. Noël

Jeepman, thanks for this great post regarding your injury and recovery. I was pleased to see the yoga pose pic that you modified in attempt to represent what your body did as the injury occurred. I had a similar experience with a flight of stairs, but with far fewer injuries. I was completely barefoot at the time of the injury. I missed about the last four stairs, walking down a dark stairwell. I thought I was at the bottom and it turned out I wasn't. My body did a similar motion as to what you described and showed in your docotored up photo. I fell downward and backwards, and all of my weight came down on my legs that had curled beneath me. I also stubbed/curled my toes in the process. I had soreness for a few days, but fortunately nothing was broken. I am betting it was due to the lack of speed, as to why I was not hurt worse. I was just walking down the stairs, not really building up any inertia. After a few days, the soreness went away and a new problem developed. I lost my big toenail. That made wearing VFFs a challenge for a little while. Again, thanks for the great detailed post and best of luck as you embark on your run.
