Jeepman, thanks for this great post regarding your injury and recovery.  I was pleased to see the yoga pose pic that you modified in attempt to represent what your body did as the injury occurred.  I had a similar experience with a flight of stairs, but with far fewer injuries.  I was completely barefoot at the time of the injury.  I missed about the last four stairs, walking down a dark stairwell.  I thought I was at the bottom and it turned out I wasn't.  My body did a similar motion as to what you described and showed in your docotored up photo.  I fell downward and backwards, and all of my weight came down on my legs that had curled beneath me.  I also stubbed/curled my toes in the process.  I had soreness for a few days, but fortunately nothing was broken.  I am betting it was due to the lack of speed, as to why I was not hurt worse.  I was just walking down the stairs, not really building up any inertia.  After a few days, the soreness went away and a new problem developed.  I lost my big toenail.  That made wearing VFFs a challenge for a little while.  Again, thanks for the great detailed post and best of luck as you embark on your run.

I'm glad to hear you didn't break anything. I would not want anyone to go through what I did. If loosing a toenail is the worst of it, count your blessings. I think the thing that really did me in was my foot being trapped in the sand as the foot bent backwards. If my foot would have been able to move freely as yours did, then I think it would have been a different story.

Well today is the one year mark. It has been a long road back to running on a regular basis. I now only run every third day. My foot needs about two days off before it feels well enough to run on again. I either swim, bike or lift on the off days to keep pushing my cardio. Sometimes its a PITA to swim or bike because it is just so easy to walk out my front door and go run. I still have pain at the top of the first metatarsal where it meets the ankle cuneiform. This is the main thing that keeps me from running everyday. I may go back to the doctor one last time and see if maybe a MRI might be able to tell why it still hurts after all this healing time. I just hope that the Lisfranc ligament isn't so loose after the injury that it might lead to degenerative joint disease of the first metatarsal. So far I've been able to avoid surgery and I plan to keep it that way. I'll give it until the end of the running season before I do anything else about my foot. I'm going to enjoy myself and run as much as I can this season. My first serious race is this up coming Saturday. I'm curious to see how hard I can press myself and find out where I'll place. No matter where I finish it will feel good to be back.

Well, tomorrow is the big day. I'm looking forward to the 5K race in the morning. The thing that stinks is I have to go into work after the race.  Angry

I did a nice and light 2.5 mile jog last night. I won't be doing any running tonight. I like taking a rest day before I race. Usually I take two rest days, but it just didn't work out that way this time. I'll try to get some pictures and a race report posted in the next few days.

It was a good day and race. The weather was perfect; sunny and about 67 F degrees at the beginning of the race. I had previously written that my goal was to run a trio of 9 minute miles. Considering the road back I’ve had, this is a pretty ambitious goal. My 9 year old son also ran in the race with me. I believe we had just over 200 people in the race with us. At the start I kept peeking at my GPS so I could settle down in a 9 minute mile pace. Anyone that has run in a race knows just how loud and crazy the start can be. I’d forgotten how loud the clip-clap of those clod hopper running shoes everyone wears. I normally key off of my own cadence to find my rhythm. However, this was impossible with all the loud running shoes surrounding us. Once we were about half a mile in things thinned out and I only sparingly checked my GPS. This is also when my son took off into a pace more suited for him. This kid is a natural born runner. He hasn’t done any running with me to prepare for the race, but at 9 years old he can still smoke me in the 5K.

About 1.5 miles into the race I could see people paying for coming out too quick at the beginning. At 2 miles in I really set my sights on a couple of runners that I’d been behind since the start of the race. They pretty much kept a 30 yard lead on me the whole way. As we rounded the last turn in the course I decided it was now or never, so I dug deep and kicked up my pace to a 7 minute mile with about 1000 meters left. With only about 600 meters left I was now on their heels. The people along the road cheering were yelling “You got a person on your tail –PUSH IT!”. I thought to myself that takes the fun out of the sneak attack from behind. With VFFs being so quite by the time they realize I’m passing them it’s too late!  Grin  I rolled into my finishing kick and ended up passing two other people that I had thought were out of my reach. They must have gassed out and had nothing left at the end.

It’s always a good feeling when nobody passes you during your final kick. I had managed a 27:05 finishing time. My peak heart rate hit 205 as it always had during my kick. I was feeling light headed but very accomplished. I had surpassed my goal time! My pace averaged out to a trio of 8:44 minute miles. The only thing I was left thinking was did I hold back too much at the beginning – no I don’t think so – I’m just happy right now.  Smiley

I meet up with the in-laws and asked them about my son. They told me he had finished up with a 25:38 time. This kid is killing me! He doesn’t train and just clicks off a 25 minute 5K. I’ve really got to get him training with me so we can find out what he can do. However, that will have to wait because football camp starts on Monday.

I finished 5th in my age group and my son won the 10 year old and under division. Before the start of the race I noticed 3 guys in racing suits. Come to find out they were part of a triathlon club. Would you like to take a wild stab at who finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in my age division?

Congratulations Jeepman! Nice job sneaking up on those runners with your feet touching so lightly they never heard you coming!

I just read all 8 pages and all I have to say is... "Wow"

Your positivity throughout all of this is really inspiring Jeepman. Reading how tough your foot was when it broke makes me love my Vibrams even more! Makes me want to go out an run right now, even though its almost 3AM (I'll just have to wait till tomorrow morning). I'm going for my 2nd barefoot run tomorrow, and thanks to your story and a lot of other's stories here on BDS' forums, I'll be taking it slow. I plan on doing the C25K program strictly barefoot.

Anyways,
Congratulations on surpassing your goal!! I was really happy for you when I read that.
