Okay not quite a barefoot activity in itself, but recently i went climbing wearing normal hiking boots. After climbing for about 7 hours, on the decent my hiking boots decided to completely disintegrate (as you can hopefully see in the photo - the rubber sole completely ripped off from the base) but LUCKILY i had my classics in my bag, saving me from 4 miles of barefoot walking down the mountain and along the road with cold & wet feet. THANK YOU FIVEFINGERS

I think the boots were just scared of the VFFs coming along as well. The stress finally got to 'em.

that single moment justified the cost to buy them in my mind!
couldn't believe it when it happened - was sliding down a scree slope at the time which probably did it but they were completely fine beforehand, and no-one else's boots were damaged.

Wow -- what on earth caused those boots to fall apart like that? Just seems like an insane blowout!
Chalk up another advantage for VFFs -- light and easy carry as backups/alternate footwear.

Obviously his feet are made of dynamite! VFFs also make great travel shoes since they won't break the weight limit on luggage.

I must wonder if those boots have Vibram soles, though. Whatever the material, it wasn't attached very well.

no it wasn't a virbam boot, it was a slightly less well known brand. I examined them afterwards and couldn't see anything that could have caused it, but now i always take a pair of fivefingers when i'm climbing or travelling (if i'm not already wearing them) just in case.

I had a pair of Lowa boots that did the same thing. For three years they seemed to be in perfect condition. Then I spend one day in 6 inches of mud playing paintball and by the end of it the soles were being held on only by duct tape.

Oddly enough, when I went searching for replacement boots that was the first time I saw VFFs and decided to try them on. I didn't buy VFFs that day, but I did buy new boots. I bought the VFFs two weeks later and the new boots are still in their box completely unused. One day I'll ebay them I guess.
