Just putting this stub up for discussion/thoughts on the new KSO Trek. Questions or thoughts - post them here. This is not to be confused with the thread on *where to buy* the KSO Trek, which is being maintained here: http://birthdayshoes.com/forum/index.php?topic=255.0

Anyone know what the thickness and grip is of the Trek's compared to the Black Flow's? I'm wondering if the Trek's would work better than my Flows or Sprints for rock climbing.

Any chance of adding Bikilas to your shopping list?

Did it ever occur to anybody that Hawkeye wants Treks? I pride myself on being perceptive to subtle hints. Wouldn't it be funny if after she finally got some she hated them? I represent all the women and small footed men who want Treks. Oddly enough I'm leaning towards not liking them because the toes are not all leather, which would have made them more water resistant or made of goretex material. Lots of things to nitpick about, but for the most part they look nice and maybe more appropriate for business casual.

Side material aside, I just got ready to head to a family dinner and threw them on with jeans. Easily the most stylish VFFs to date -- they actually look nice/expensive/high quality -- as opposed to just utilitarian/functional (like all black/brown KSOs).
Wonder what my wife will think ...

I wonder if the toes were all leather then the thickness between the toes might make them spread uncomfortably, maybe even in a bad way.

Ok so I've done some sleuthing involving contacting Barefoot Ted as he's the closest to the source on these things as you can get.
Here's what I learned from the communication (which apparently is authoritative) - the material on the side of the toes is is not leather because the synthetic material is stretchier than leather, so this stretchiness allows the Treks to be sized for more varied toe sizes (girths?).
This actually makes a lot of sense not only from a design standpoint -- trying to design foot gloves that fit a variety of feet and toes -- but it also is consistent with the rest of the Trek design. Stretchy synth material is also utilized around the ankle (see the video for what I mean) where they "panelize" the sides of the ankle and top of the foot (just one monster panel on the top of the foot) and the stretchy material accommodates varieties of feet while still being leather sheathed.
Of course, that leads one to the next question, well why didn't they panelize the sides of the toes, and I think the answer there is that the added material would seriously muck up the negative space between the toes.
Finally, I learned that the Treks are not intended to be waterproof, which of course, makes sense as they aren't!
So I hope this helps answer the question! And if you have any other questions, let me know (hopefully I explained the above well).
Probably will repost this elsewhere as I think this question arose on another thread ...

Doesn't leather stretch and conform to your body like leather gloves...
Arguing a moot point.

I think he means more of a case of two people having the same length feet, but one of them has much more plump toes, so the synthetic material works better because it's stretchier, allowing both individuals to be able to purchase the same shoe, whereas an all leather shoe would be really uncomfortable or even unwearable to the plump toed fellow.

That is my understanding. Even as much as leather would stretch over time, ramming sausage toes into toe pockets until they stretch probably would be uncomfortable. But yeah, it is what it is I guess.

Anyone else upset with the choice to make these VFF with animal skins? Whats up with killing kangaroos for footwear? I love my KSOs... and supported vibram partially for being non-leather... this sucks - I'm really pissed off. I think they are going to lose a lot of folks this way... bummer, because i would love the trek otherwise.

Goretex would have been a better choice, but then again it might have retailed for $150 or more.

as someone who's played soccer his whole life, Kangaroo leather is my prime choice for a boot so I was personally excited to hear these were made of kangaroo leather. Sorry peta people...
