Bought my first VFFs a week ago (sprints) and have been wearing them around the house an on the treadmill a bit to get used to them. This weekend, I decided to come out of my shell and actually go out in public in them. Went to the grocery store and found I was nervous for some reason! LOL! My husband thought it was quite funny and was watching to see if anyone noticed. The only person who seemed to do a double-take was a guy wearing a kilt--I didn't think he was in a position to judge! LOL!
I'm loving them and will work up my nerve to wear them to the office (on "casual day") eventually.
My husband is quite jealous of my VFFs. Nobody seems to have his size anywhere (M47), so he's having to wait for the new shipments to come in. He was the first in our circle of friends to "discover" them and now I have a pair, my sister has two pairs, my mom and two of HER friends have pairs...and he's still plodding along in his "normal" shoes. Poor, poor man.
I just wanted to say I've really, really been enjoying reading all the posts and information on this site. Everytime I come up with a question, I'm able to find a very informative thread on here that answers all my questions. So...THANKS to all of you for all your posts!

It does take a while for the nervousness to wear off! I think I'd crossed the bridge (as it were) the day one guy was just staring at my feet and I lifted up a foot to wiggle the toes at him. It freaked him out (seriously) and made his girlfriend laugh. Mwuahahaha.

FYI - kayakshed.com has m47 in the kso (grey/palm) and classic (walnut). Way to get your FiveFingers out of the closet!

Speaking as someone who wears a kilt from time to time. I believe that he may have just been a little surprised that someone would have taken such a different approach to personal freedom. I love wearing my Kilt and VFF's together.

Being a bit selfconcious about them is nornal. I now find myself in the position where I forget I am wearing them and give people wierd looks when they stare at my feet. What kind of wierdo's stare at someones feet anyway?

I think the whole issue deserves a few threads, I mean we all were a bit self-conscious at the start, and I'm still like that, although less of course. I kinda go on the look nowadays for situations that might make feel me uncomfortable. When I feel there's a bunch of youngsters/girls, or any other 'threathening' personalities, I just dive in, and let myself get accustomed to the feeling. I'm feeling more and more comfortable, and people are reacting to it. I'm loving my VFF's as a personality training tool as well.

its an interesting topic really - i pretty much wear my vffs everywhere but work but when i go out and just dont want to deal with all the attention i wear my dharmas - i mean - sometimes i just dont feel in the mood to be a vibram rep - as for looking at feet - i think we do tend to do this alot but its only because we have something unique on our feet that we now begin to notice
to the original poster - good luck to hubby on his search - i am size 46 and usually not a problem finding stock but the 47s could be a diff story

I can honestly say I wasn't ever self-conscious or nervous about wearing them. I've always been someone who likes attention and likes to stand out so I found they went perfectly with my personality.

Awesome! Welcome out of the foot closet! My wife is the only one who hasn't gotten used to the "look." Everyone else...heck, I think I could be a Vibram rep, and probably make some money, because everyone wants them!

Hey--great news! After reading about the sizing differences between the black kso's and the other colours, I hunted down a pair of M46 in the grey/palm at a store nearby. I'm going to surprise him by picking them up tomorrow. Hope they fit him--he'll be excited to finally have a pair!
Also glad to hear I'm not the only one who was nervous going out in the world with VFFs. I'll let you all know when I wear them to the office--conservative, suit-and-tie kinda place. Should be interesting...

I've been wearing VFFs for a long time now, but I can still remember the first time on the subway in New York. It's not kosher to look directly at your fellow passengers across the aisle, so what do you do? You look down at people's feet/shoes! So, you can't hide. It's also not normal to have conversations with people on the subway. But with VFFs on, you find yourself chatting all the time with friendly and curious strangers.
Have fun!
