you still have to pay customs, so knowing someone in the US is better, but you still end up paying a lot less than in the EU/UK

It is indeed far cheaper to befriend someone abroad and work out a mutual shipping arrangement.  We all run into similar issues.  Either a product we want is only released in the opposite market or the price point makes a product unattainable.  If you want to avoid customs and gain access to US products, you need to know someone in the US.

As far as I have seen the prices are a bit expensive. I have used shipito.com and they are reliable and offer a wide range of shipping options and prices

The only remaining online store in the US with reasonable shipping fees that I know is CrossroadsOnline. They ship to Europe for $28 (≤$100) $35 (>$100, ≥$200), $40 (>$200...).
As for the customs, I had to pay customs duties sometimes, but some others didn't have to. The main drawback isn't the VAT applied (18% of the CIF value which includes shipping fee) but the fixed customs duty management tax (30.90 + 5.56 VAT).

I wonder whether there's a tax-exempt/tax-free upper limit of 150 euros based on those shipments I received which I wasn't asked to pay customs duties for, and this piece of information I found in Wikipedia:

European Union
The basic customs law is harmonised across Europe. This includes customs duties and restrictions. Customs tax from 150 . In addition, see regulations of each Member State
.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customs#European_Union

However, I wasn't able to find the answer here: http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/index_en.htm
Perhaps somebody else with more knowledge on the topic or more used to perusing in this kind of documents may find it out.

Yes, I have bought on Crossroads and it is fine.

Goods below 150 value (including shipping costs) are exempt of import taxes, but are subject to VAT (18% in this case).

If you use a courier (kind of DHL, UPS, etc) you will for sure pay taxes. If you use USPS shipping standard (about two weeks delivery) there are reports of some parcels being stopped in customs and paying taxes, and other passing succesfully withouth tax.
