Though a huge part of being a FiveFingersFan is the desire to be more barefoot while having the ability to remain shod, I can't really bring myself to seriously consider other "barefoot" alternatives. None of them seem close enough. That said, Skora seems promising. If you follow bdayshoes on twitter, you know that Skora just released one of their two concept designs for their new barefott running shoes (due out in 2010). For those of you who don't here's the link: http://us1.campaign-archive.com/?u=1ad082405a1d09762c97ae354&id=5b52b5d4c5I love at these and I see all of the form factors we need, and thus, a running shoe I might actually consider getting. Albeit, FF is still the weapon of choice. EDIT: In retrospect, this probably belongs in the Alternatives board.

Well, they look pretty. But I'll stick with my V5Fs. I like my toes.

I agree. What would I like to see besides VFFs? Maybe a 'shoe' upper, very, very stretchy and flexible, with seperated toe pads on the sole, making for a shoe that I can slide in and out of quickly (yup I'm a tri geek) but give me five toes for stability and speed. I don't have faith that it would work though.

I'm not a runner per se, but I do run in my VFFs and barefoot as well, so I'm always interested to see what the market has to offer. I think having more minimalistic shoes on the market is great since the competition should drive even more innovation and hopefully drive the price down as well.

I just love it because it means that my VFF's won't seem like such a far-fetch'd idea when other people have similarly minimal footwear.

It would be interesting to have a minimalist alternative where I can wear normal socks. I recently bought a lot of socks and now don't wear them because of my vffs.

I'm glad they put this in there...
- Extra wide toe box to allow your feet to function as nature intended
that would be my main concern. having been vff'ed, I now hate shoes that narrow out at the end.

That made me especially happy as well. They seem to have taken the entire barefoot experience into consideration. My only concern is that a wide toe box could alter strides or cause the front of the shoes to slide around, not allowing for a constant surface for the bottom of the toes.

WOW! I like the idea too of somethnig that I can get in to quickly (i too am a "tri geek") that allows me to have the barefoot running feeling. was going to but running flats as an alternative for my londer runs until I get into running long in my VFF's. Hmm....too bad this won't be out until mid-2010! I would have loved to wear them for Ironman Lake Placid.

I have a pair of Brooks spikeless cross country flats that are ok, but they really exaggerate my pronation because of the way they fit to my feet; even a solid mid-foot strike rolls inward off of the sole. I have a favor coming to me from my friend at Mizuno, though, and I'm going to try out the Wave Universe, which is supposedly too thin for most runners and very hard to find in stores- they're 3.8oz and I have to give them a try; I'll post on them when I try them. As for wide toeboes, I'm also on the fence. They feel great in certain shoes (like the Zoots and the Lunarglides) on longer runs or at tempo paces, but they always give me a wishy-washy feeling when I try to push a fast pace. There may always be a tradeoff with shoes like that; the Vibrams feel roomy AND supportive at any pace!

Orlin03....have you run in your Mizuno Wave Universe yet? I am looking for something that's more "solid" on the bottom for winter/wet conitions like I am seeing here this weekend. As long as my feet are dry they remain warm - so I am hesitant to run in them in the ccolder wet days here in NJ.

Check Out www.inov-8.comThey understand the whole barefoot/minimalist thing but also realise that for a lot of off-road you need a certain amount of grip and underfoot protection. There is talk on the FRA Forum. http://forum.fellrunner.org.uk/showthread.php?t=8680 that says they are going to be doing barefoot shoes

I have run in the Mizunos. They are a great shoe; very flat and flexible, but not made with soft or squishy rubber. They had a firm but very minimal feel, and I was able to run in them without much trouble.Definately a good alternative when a shoe is needed.
