Can someone who bought some socks off ebay (or elsewhere) give me some advice on what socks to get? I don't want to pay for injinjis and all the links to previous ebay items have all expired.

Just search for "toe socks" on eBay - you'll get tons of results.

I'm aware of that. I was asking for advice as to what socks/sellers are decent. Most of those items are like $1 for one pair, but then shipping is $10+ for each item, and no one will consolidate shipping costs.

I figured enough people on these boards would have specific sellers than they've dealt with and could recommend.

I was hesitant to answer this question as everyone's results may vary and what you are looking for may not be what I'm looking for...but here goes.  

I simply wanted some thin cheap toe socks to help with the stink and to give the presence of socks when I wear my Treks to work with my Kahkis (which is every day now).  I bought 5 pairs of these - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180573014785&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT and while they are thin and can snag easily on rings/etc when doing laundry, I've been wearing them every day (except Sundays) for the past two months or so very happily.  The part between the toes feels like there's a hole there - and is probably the weakest part - but whatever small hole may or may not be there - hasn't grown and hasn't given me any grief whatsoever.

I've been so happy with them that I just ordered 5 more pairs because I wasn't keeping up with the wash.  For what it's worth, they are listed at $0.99 + $1.99 for shipping - so that makes them $3 a pair - but when I ordered this last set of 5 I noticed I was only billed $13.70 - so they did knock some off the shipping.

This seller treated me right - and if I go looking for more toe socks again - I'll be going to this seller.  Please keep in mind though - they are coming from Shanghai and took approximately 2 weeks to arrive.

EDITED TO ADD:  FWIW...I've not tried Injinis so have no comparison info.  Also, there is no heel in these persay - so you can flip them over (so the big toe is at the big toe) and pretty much wear them on either foot.  Also, when wearing with my Treks (size 43) the socks extends above the back tab of my Treks approximately 2 inches.  Hope this helps.

I picked up 2 pairs of the injinji compression socks for this winter.  I miss a lot of my long runs because I cut short when my toes lose feeling in the sub-freezing temps.  I hope they work out for the cold.  They do take away a bit more ground feel but it's worth it if my toes don't go numb.

what about the injinji toeless socks.  How do they fit with the vff?  I've got my first race on Saturday and the temp is to be 35.Any socks with toes will make my feet uncomfortable

I don't find toe socks that comfortable with VFFs, but rather good with normal shoes. And I can't be bothered modifying each new sock for my slightly webbed toes.

I love my VFFs without socks

Since I like the idea of wearing my VFFs year round and I object to cold toes I've been researching sock options. The challenge is my VFFs are all ready on the snug side. I technically wear a 38 on one foot and a 40 on the other. So I split the diff with 39s. So sticking socks in the mix makes things tight.

After a little experimenting I'm loving the Injinis liner socks. They are lightweight, provide additional warmth, and are thin enough that I don't get scrunched feet. As a bonus, liner socks are quick to wash out in the sink at night. So I don't need to have 20 pairs of toe socks. I can just wash one pair and alternate with the other. This keeps me from going bankrupt with toe socks and allows me to save for new VFFs.

I got mine at REI using a discount coupon I got for being a member. I figure pennywise, pound foolish. I've got quality socks that work.

I recently bought some Injinji socks for the first time in the last month or so to prepare for winter.  I have two pairs of the ankle-high ones and two of the crew cut style.  I haven't had any problems with the socks at all, and I find them to be really comfortable in my VFFs or just by themselves around the house.  Last weekend I ran my first 5k and wore a pair because it was pretty chilly outside.  They worked great.  So far the only complaint I can muster is regarding the price.  They are definitely a much higher quality than regular socks you find at Wal-Mart, but ~$10/pair is kind of steep.  My fears of losing a sock in the wash has jumped dramatically since my purchase.

I split time between my EVOs and KSOs.

I wear athletic socks with my EVOs (took out the insoles, however).  I don't wear socks with my KSOs, which are too snug for them anyways.  As a result, the KSOs are stored outside because of the funk.  (And yes, I wash them and utilize birthdayshoes techniques to rid them of the smell, but no, it's not a 100% solution).
