Hi. I recently purchased 2 pair of classics, both in 47, and have a question on fit. One pair is in the khaki, the other in the gray/orange. For some reason it seems the khaki's fit a bit better.

One thing I notice is that there is a bit of tightness around the big toe, the big toe cap of the sole tugging slightly against me. It doesn't hurt, but is noticeable. It feels like my toe is right against the cap. If I pick my foot up and press against the VFF's at the back of my heel, I do notice some play between the big toe and the cap, but this gets lost when my feet are on the ground.

I only have maybe 20 minutes wearing them, so I'm not sure if this will change and loosen up? What is the collective experience here if the fit changes over the first few weeks?

I did order a pair of 48's in black from an online shop, to compare. On a call with Vibram today, I was told there may be 30% stretch, but I think this is in regards to the fabric.

Other than that the fit is great, no heal slip...I wouldn't be worried of them coming off in a run. Very glove like. (I do notice that the other toes have lots of extra room.) I probably couldn't wear socks in them during the fall/winter.

Thanks for any thoughts.

There may be size variations between colors (See the posts on size difference between colors). But as to stretch, you're right that the material will give, not the rubber base. In other words, if the length is too short, that won't stretch, but if you have a high arch or fat feet that fabric will give to accomadate that. After washing the shoes shrink back to normal ready to give again. That sounds weird.

Go with what pair fits the best. Also socks don't make your toes longer, so much as wider and the material will stretch for that. There are also a few threads on wearing VFFs with injinji socks.

My classics fit similarly to yours -- my big toes is kinda right at the cap.  I was worried about this on initial buy (I actually also tested out one size higher and waffled between the two), but I went with the more snug fit as it wasn't uncomfortable -- a snug fit, so long as it's not uncomfortably snug, is probably a good thing.

But go with what feels right.

As for sizing differences between colors, though the mold used for every size across colors should be *exactly* the same size, the fabric between each pair of VFFs is always likely to have some play in it -- stitching together fabric is always likely to yield some amount of play -- so long as each size is within certain specs / or a certain tolerance, all is well.  But this can also lead to minor discrepancies across the same style, same color, or same style, different color.

I have a pair of generation 1 Classic VFFs in grey/orange and a pair of current gen brown/taupe Classic VFFs that both fit virtually the same.

I also have a pair of grey/green KSOs and black KSOs -- the blacks are slightly more snug than the greys, but when I wear them both, it is difficult for me to perceive a difference in size between the two.

Bottom line is that to be 100% assured of any size being the "right" size for you, you're best trying them on -- which makes online ordering a bit trickier (though not impossible - I've gotten all my VFFs online!).

I should clarify about the sizing. I don't mean to suggest that the mold size is different, but definately the material sizing can be more snug between colors. Case in point black KSOs are tighter than the green/grey KSOs. If you can fit you feet into the shoe because of the tight material on top it's not going to matter if the bottom is the right size. The top makes a big difference for people with wide feet or high arches.

Just something to keep in mind.

I have a pair of black classics and when walking normally, there's just a slight bit of a room between my big toe and the end of the shoe, but when I run, especially if I tighten the string on the back, My toe touches the tip of the shoe, which I actually like because I feel like my foot and the shoe are one haha. Weird, I know.

an update: i received my black classics (48) and the space around the big toe seems to fit fine, maybe a bit loose. but the rest of the shoe is really big: quite big in the heel, lots of extra room in the other toe compartments, loose along the bottom of the midsole when my foot is off the ground. i can have the cord really tightened up, and that doesn't make much of a difference.

so it seems my choice will be between the khaki's in the 47: very glove like fit, and just a little tight in one spot. or the bigger, looser 48's.

or i could order a pair of the sprints in a 47/48 and see how they fit!

Sounds like you're a 47, you don't want the you VFFs too loose. The sprints will help stay on your feet better and you might be able to get away with a 48, but the best thing is to try them on since there can be variations in sizing. Also whatever material stetch you have can be tightened by up washing.
