Just picked up my first pair of KSO's in Grand Marais, MN after reading about VFF's on twitter and then on Barefoot Ted's blog.  I am just devouring info on running barefoot.  I manage three Birkenstock specialty stores and have been wearing Birk's for 15 years now and have zero foot pain but have not run for 5 years because of pain in my knees and feet due to crappy shoes.  I have been wearing my KSO's to and from work for short walks and have loved them.  They feel very similar when I walk to my Birk's.  However, I haven't run in them yet and would love some pointers starting out.  Thanks for any advice in advance!!

What kind of birks do you typically wear?  I've been a big Boston fan for about a decade and worn Milanos for a smidge longer than that.

Well, I wear my Arizona's and Boston's most frequently, but considering I have sold Birks for about 16 years now I have over 30 pair.  Hazard of the job I guess.  Lately, though, I wear a pair of thong Birkenstocks for men called the Medina.  Love em.  What most impresses me about VFF's, though, is how much they mirror the concept of Birks.  Both mimicing barefoot walking to strengthen the feet and lower legs.  I love them!  I can't wait to start running in them.  Take care!

I'd worn Birks - and only Birks - for about 30 years (mostly Arizonas and occasionally Bostons). Haven't worn them once since getting my KSOs, though!  Grin

love Birks as well. To answer your question on running, I'd say start very slow as in speed and mileage build up. You will be sore if not used to running BF. I practiced and still do sometimes running BF just for form and to get feet stronger. After having ran for over 2 years and getting up to 1/2 marathon distances, I am back to 2-3 miles in VFF's and still sore. But I am only sore in my muscles now not all my joints and to be honest it feels GREAT!!! Hope this gives some clues.
