I stop my toes at the beginning of the toe pocket, lining each one up. Then I put my index finger between the pinky toe pocket and the next one and coax my pinkie in. The first pair of KSO Trek that I tried on at EMS took me 20 minutes to get on. Now it just takes a few seconds. It's a great exercise for developing patience!!

This is also my technique It's weird that this conversation actually occurs when talking about adults putting on shoes....
Well.... .......My wife and I were on a walk in our neighborhood today and she was wearing her Merrill water shoes sans socks while pushing our daughter in the stroller. I was pedaling along on my mtn bike giving my sore calves a break. She developed blisters and I casually asked her if she would try some Sprints (since they look very similar to her shoes) just for exercise. She said, "Yeah, as long as you don't get me some crazy color." I'll be ordering her first VFF's in the next day or so!!!!!!
I've been working out in gym for some time now in bare feet. I recently bought VFF. Recently I also saw the video of proper running technique with Lee Saxby. The video is what really ignited the running for me. Never was before. Now I do barefoot runs on the treadmill. It's all very new with supporters at my side. I'm generally in pretty good shape with a unconventional training background. lots of free weights, and toys that are not in most gyms. Lots of variety. With the barefoot treadmill running it is very easy to measure distance, and time. My environment is controlled, and my running surface is predictable. I have found it to be much easier to learn, and practice with complete bare feet. You can feel the sensations in your feet much greater then wearing VFF In fact my goal is too take the bare feet outside on the streets, and trails. So this is a work in progress for me. I'm very happy with form, and the bare feet is what has inspired me to do some running as well as hiking bare foot. My barefoot running on treadmill is more like a floating sensation very light on my feet. Much more low impact style of run compared to conventional shoe running. This floating sensation is why I like it. It's just fun. It feels very natural to me to run like this correctly. It's like being a kid again. Though I would not mind a actual barefoot run clinic just to double check things.
As far as soreness yes I have it. I'm new to running, and barefoot running. At first the soreness was in my foot ankle area. We have many, many muscles down there. Muscles that I have never used like that before. After my first run at 12 minutes at 4.4 mph my feet were pretty sore, but felt good. Then the soreness started to move up my leg. It actually is not our calves that are getting sore. We have about 6-7 muscles below, and around the calves that start behind the ankle. so yes it is the same general area, but it is actually not our calves. Could be depending on your fitness level, but it is primarily other muscles around the calves. Muscles you don't use much in conventional shoes. I know my limits well. the soreness feels good. It is nice to let the feet be free, but I just feel the VFF is a bit too much between your sole, and the surface. You just loose too much sensation. Feeling that sensation really helps to dial in form. Having the VFF on when you loose the sensation it can increase risk of over doing it. Cause your body won't react as quickly with some sensations being blocked. I'm just saying be mindful of that, but have fun with the VFF for running.
I have been increasing my distance a little at a time and trying to pick my speed up a little. My calves are killing me again in the way that you describe. I completely understand what you mean about over-thinking your stride (consciously or not)...
I think it's 90 days. I returned my KSO's to Vibram (bought direct) within the 90 days. I had a stitching problem. Took a while but I got the replacement.
My first VFF injury occurred when I was running with one of my dogs. We ran over a storm grate and he got spooked, darted ahead of me and into my path. My pinky toe slammed into his incredibly tense achilles tendon on his hind leg. This happened two weeks ago and my toe is still sore (but no longer purple)...
