Had my best race pace yet, 7:37 min/mile pace over 6.2 miles. During the last 1/3 section of the race, I was able to loosen up and slow my breathing significantly. The relaxation helped me to control my heartbeat while accelerating past a number of runners I had been slugging behind for most of the race. The 3/4 mile hill ou tof the coullee bottom was a little intimidating. Although my pace did fluctuate between a 10 & 11 min mile, increasing my cadence seemed to be the trick to making the ascent without stopping. I'll have to add a little more hill work to my training.

Changing your cadence is exactly what you have to do to tackle hills. The thing I always remind my son of is "Equal effort, not equal speed".

Do need to up the mileage though

7 miles in 60 minutes today.

I gotta say guys, this one feels like a milestone run for me. I feel like this is truly the best I've been since I started running in January. I use to be so out shape all through high school, and now I'm doing this. I only thought I knew what a runner's high was before today. I know I still have a long way to go, but I feel good.

This morning’s run was 6K at my target pace (6 mins/km, or 10 km/hr) for Sunday’s 30K race. In my KSOs and on the treadmill. (Full post on my blog.)

I'm as ready as I'm going to be...

yesterday 6km, today 8km on my old pre-vff route and my times are already dropping (although i am not trying). the flow treks aren't too great atm though, temperatures already jumped to 18C (20C tomorrow), ksos would be awesome, but i really want a bikila and don't feel like throwing too much money out in such a short time (a pair of classics is also on their way)...

got a race al?

Yes, on Sunday I'll do the Around the Bay 30K (http://aroundthebayroadrace.com/) in Hamilton, Ontario, about 40K from where I live. I did this race last year, in cold temperatures and pouring rain, and in conventional shoes. This year, I'll do it my KSOs, and am hoping for better weather.

The AtB is a great race. It's the oldest footrace in North America, first run in 1894, three years before the Boston Marathon. Lots of history, lots of legendary winners. It's got some great quirks, such as the midget you're supposed to "high five" for good luck (at about the 25K mark, just before you get to a long, killer hill), and the Grim Reaper, a fully-costumed and made-up gent who waits beside a big old cemetery about 3K from the finish, calling out "The end is nigh" to passing runners. The finish is cool, too. You run into a big arena, through the finishing chute, and, if you look up as you cross the line, you can see yourself on the humungous Jumbotron.

As i said, all I need is decent weather...

I’ve just signed on to have my results from Sunday’s Around the Bay 30K race posted on my Facebook page. As I cross the timing points on the course (at the 10k, 15k, 20k, and finish line timing mats), my Facebook page will be updated with the time within one minute of me crossing the mat.

If you’re interested (and I hope you are), my username on Facebook is alan.thwaits.
