beginner's guide to vibram five fingers

Topo Athletic M-RR: First Look

I'm a big fan of FiveFingers and minimalist shoes generally. I love that there are so many new shoe companies out there catering to this crowd, along with many better-known companies producing minimalist options. That said, I think I've about had my fil… more »

ANI Brand Barefoot Shoes - Review

I've been told I can get away with all the bizarre styles that minimalist shoe makers keep producing because I'm rather odd myself. Apparently I look like the kind of guy who would have shoes with individual toe pockets or run a race in sandals with soc… more »

Luongo Footwear Review

I'm rather partial to slip-on shoes. Especially slip-ons that are thin but tough and exceedingly functional. A big part of this is that I like to get moving as soon as possible. I own several pairs of huaraches and the ones I wear most are rarely the be… more »

ChiRunning, the Book. A Minimalist Perspective.

Just finished reading ChiRunning, the book about the popular technique. When I say "popular" in this context I'm referring mostly to the passion ChiRunning practitioners exude for it. I'm slightly terrified about commenting at all, because in my experie… more »

Inov-8 Bare-Grip 200 Review

So I wanted something with good grip, but also something that wasn't as stiff and restrictive as the cleats I'd been wearing all my life. I started a journey to find a pair of minimal shoes that could replace football cleats. I searched high and low for user opinions on "minimal cleats" or "minimalist football shoes". Needless to say, there wasn't much out there to help me in this search. So after looking at endless websites and fighting with my indecisive self, I finally settled on a pair that looked to be up to the challenge. What I ended up with was a pair of Inov-8 Bare-Grip 200's. more »

Topo Athletic's Two-Toed Tabi Sneaker

Today, we get a more tangible glimpse of just what Post is bringing to market come Summer 2013. And namely, what you can expect are advanced versions of some of the original toe-minded shoes a.k.a. the Jika-tabi (often referred to as just "Tabi" or "tabi boots"). The split-toe Tabi design is probably why FiveFingers got the moniker of being "ninja shoes." Meanwhile, they've been reviewed by at least one barefoot runner — RunBare's Michael Sandler — as far back as November 2009 (video). Believe it or not, the 1951 Boston Marathon winner (shigeki Tanaka) crossed the finish line in Tabi shoes. more »

FiveFingers are terrible?

I came across this yesterday. FiveFingers are apparently terrible and need to go away in 2013. Now, I think the author was joking to a large degree. Cord Jefferson's mention of owning a pair of skinny jeans himself and still wearing them is a smirk at h… more »

Ridgewood Turkey Trot 8K—Or, how to do barefoot all wrong

After one of my early, more successful barefoot runs.
After one of my early, more successful barefoot runs.
Like many runners and other athletes, I hold several concurrent goals in mind — most of which are ever-moving targets. First is the simplest and most familiar: the shifting distance goal. At first I just wanted to work up to a 10k. Then it was maybe 15… more »
