The Vibram Five Fingers Trek Sport (released July 2010) might alternatively be named the KSO Trek Sport. The Trek Sport features the aggressively lugged sole of the leather-clad KSO Trek with an upper that is more reminiscent of the standard Vibram KSO (Jump to posts on the Trek Sport below!). That said, the Sport Trek’s natural fiber upper is made from “Coconut Active Carbon,” a high-tech performance fabric. Additionally, the Trek Sport features a basic Achilles notch for added comfort as well as some reflective material across the top strap.

Like the KSO Trek, the Trek Sport’s lugged sole makes it ideal for trails, providing added traction on loose terrain.

The Five Fingers Trek Sport has no arch support and only a small amount of cushioning or padding — sporting a 4mm EVA midsole, the Trek Sport is thicker than the KSO or Flow, both of which have a 2mm EVA insole. However, despite the extra thickness and the cleated sole, the Trek Sport still transmits a great deal of ground feedback, making it a fantastic “barefoot” shoe for outdoors wear.

Model specifics

Here are the technical specifications of the Vibram Five Fingers Sport Trek straight from Vibram:

Vibram’s TrekSport offers a 4mm EVA midsole for plating protection and a lightly cleated 4mm Vibram performance rubber outsole for added traction on a variety of surfaces. The Coconut Active Carbon upper offers natural breathability and abrasion resistance for maximum performance during your outdoor and athletic pursuits.

TREK SPORT IS BEST FOR: Light Trekking, Trail and Road Running, Cross Training, CrossFit, Walking & Travel.

The standout features of the Trek Sport include:

  • Closed top provides a “seal” around the ankle to “Keep Stuff Out.”
  • The Trek Sport has a lightly cleated Vibram sole that provides added traction running on loose, natural terrain.
  • The Trek Sport has a 4mm midsole, which reduces “barefoot feel” as compared to less built-up models like the Classic, Sprint, or KSO. That said, the cushioning provides added comfort on contact with hard roots and rocks.
  • The Trek Sport has a coconut fabric upper which may provide added breath-ability, comfort, and maybe even odor protection (This will be tested over time).
  • You get much of the function of the KSO Trek but for $25 (20%) less in price!

Sizing and fit

If you’ve never sized your foot for Vibram Five Fingers, you need to consult the Vibram Five Fingers sizing chart (image) and measure the length of your feet as presecribed. Vibram sizing does not correspond to standard shoe sizes!

If you’ve sized in Vibrams before, note that Trek Sports size slightly larger than the same size in the Classic or Sprint models. So a 43 Trek Sport will fit larger than a 43 Classic or 43 Sprint. For this reason, Vibram prescribes you size down in the Trek Sport compared to the Classic or Sprint models.

Generally, it is better to size up if you’re in between sizes per your foot measurements and the Vibram sizing chart — you don’t want your toes bending out of lack of room! Also, the Trek Sport’s closed-top design means that if you have particularly high arches or “high feet” the Trek Sport may not fit properly.
