Vibram Five Fingers Bikila Release Date Update [Of Sorts]
05.06.10 - The Vibram Five Fingers Bikila is out!
As 2010 rolls forward ("spring"ing forward for those of us in daylight savings time), tips and scuttlebutt surrounding the release date for the Vibram Five Fingers Bikila — the "barefoot running shoe" from Vibram — continue to eek in. The majority of those tips put the release of the Bikila in April 2010.
Interestingly enough, the Boston Marathon is on April 19, 2010. Is this a coincidence? I don't know. What I do know is that Abebe Bikila raced and won the 1960 Olympics marathon, that Barefoot Ted ran the 2006 Boston Marathon in Vibram Five Fingers*, and that Vibram USA is based out of Concord, Massachusetts.
Were I a betting man, I'd put my money on the Vibram Five Fingers Bikila being available to buy from running shoe** stores and online running shoe retailers around mid-April — just in time for you to blow your tax "refund" on a pair (Rumors put the suggested retail price at $100)
Regardless of the specific date, the Vibram Five Fingers Bikila is going to be here before you know it and BirthdayShoes will be all over the release! As a way to assuage any who are just dying to get their feet into a pair of VFF Bikilas, I've created a desktop wallpaper collage of Five Fingers Bikila photos and stock imagery. You can grab the wallpaper in 1000 x 625 (small) or 1440 x 900 (large).
Finally, if you want to save yourself from hitting CTRL+r and refreshing BirthdayShoes on the hour, every hour for the next few days or weeks in anticipation of the Bikila's release, just subscribe to the BirthdayShoes feed by email. * What seems like an eternity ago in the world of Vibram Five Fingers, "Barefoot Ted" McDonald was likely the first Vibram-shod marathon runner in the world. No doubt his 2006 Boston Marathon run was an epochal development in the popularization of Vibram Five Fingers. Read this 2006 Vibram interview with Barefoot Ted accompanying his 2006 marathon race here.
** Word I've received is that the Vibram Bikila will only be carried by retailers that also carry other running shoes.
