I was a relative latecomer to the FiveFingers game. My first pair were the Trek Sports, and most of those I came to own since then were still newer styles. As such, I never experienced the collective heartbreak that came from the discontinuation of the FiveFinger classics — nor the elation that followed with the announcement of the new EL-X. Though I’m not a new FiveFingers user generally, I am coming at this revamped classic style with an untarnished perspective. Read on for more.

Tim beat me to it with a very thorough running review, as well. I agree with pretty much all of their observations. Plus the two of them took plenty of pictures already. Clearly a lot of us over here at Birthday Shoe were excited about the EL-X and wanted to review them, if only briefly and from as many angles as possible. Which is how I found myself tasked with doing some cross training in them. More specifically, CrossFit.
For perspective, my favorite running FiveFingers are SeeYas and my favorite ones for CrossFit are Komodo Sports. That hasn’t changed after trying the EL-X in both situations, but I don’t mean that as a negative towards the EL-X.
The thing about any slip-on is that you can construct it almost any way you want, but it’s still a slip-on. As such, you’re going to wiggle in it. Up until this point I’ve not tried any slip-on shoes that could handle most standard CrossFit movements. The EL-X, while not necessarily my preferred cross training shoe, really held its own. In both running and CrossFit, the EL-X felt at times like it was on the verge of slipping off. But it never did. Actually it never even came close. After a few weeks of it, the sensation of imminent slippage died down, and I recalled that when I first started running in SeeYas I would get the same sensation.
That said, any wiggle you feel is most likely about adaptation. Once you’ve worn them a bit, you start to trust them. That’s a huge accomplishment for a slip-on shoe, and Vibram deserves some major props for that. It didn’t matter what the movement was — olympic lifts, box jumps, toes-to-bar, burpees — the EL-X stayed put. It was impressive. The only days I disliked wearing the EL-X was when double unders were part of the programming. But that’s true of all toe shoes for me, because I’m not the best in the world at jumping rope which means my toes and forefoot get whipped quite a bit. So in that way, the EL-X performed no better or worse than any other of my FiveFingers.
The area where the EL-X shined the most, though, was in its light weight. Don’t underestimate this, whether you’re a runner or a CrossFitter. I’ve done some training barefoot in the past and the EL-X is hands down the closest I’ve gotten to that feeling while still maintaining a little protection. Although the Komodo Sport remains my preferred CrossFit shoe, I do find myself craving still-lighter weight on some days and reaching for the EL-X. Especially when short runs are part of the programming.
I did find them to be ever-so-slightly snugger than my other FiveFingers. This may be intentional in order to compensate for the lack of any strapping or lacing system. It wasn’t bad and didn’t affect me personally, but if your usual FiveFingers size truly is so tight that even a hair tighter would be too much I’d highly suggest trying on a pair at the store before buying.
I know that this is a little more free-form than my typical review, but I wanted to be sure to get my $0.02 in on the EL-X. And really, it’s quite a statement in itself when you’ve got reviewers clamoring to find some way, somehow to review it. It’s a fantastic shoe. They’ve taken over as my primary quick-throw-on pair for walking the dog or most other quick activities. They may not have dethroned my primary running or CrossFit shoes, but they sub in easily and well for both. They’re ideal for any mild athletic activity. Most especially, perhaps, I’d recommend them as a starting point for anyone interested in dipping their toes into the toe-shoe world without breaking the bank or stressing too much about which of the varying styles is right for you. If you’re not quite to that point in your toe-shoe obsession yet, the EL-X may be where you want to start.
In short, Vibram hit a home run here in terms of creating an ideal and versatile entry-level shoe that truly represents their brand and the direction the company is headed.

I am such a huge fan of the El-X! They have revamped the classic in a way that leaves me sort of sad. I love the classic, and this is better in a lot of ways that I don’t want to even admit.
The slippage you mentioned does go away after a while and you just forget that you are wearing shoes, really. You just get to be naturally walking around, or running around, or CrossFitting. My favorite shoes for CrossFitting are the KomodoSport and the Sprint.
So how exactly is the Komodo Sport better for crossfit? Does it have much more lateral traction?
I couldn’t agree more.I own 5 different pairs of fivefingers including two pairs of classics as I was afraid they would stop making them (I’m that guy that buys 5 of the exact same thing just incase it stops being produced!).I bought a pair of the EL-X’s a week ago and they are right up there with the classics for me and quickly becoming my favorite pair! I was starting to worry about the future of fivefingers. They seem to have been focused on making really odd shoes with thicker and thicker soles that happened to have toes on them. Hopefully these will be around for awhile!
These are my new favorites with the SeeYa’s a close second. These I can wear to work without a problem because of the all black color. They look and feel great and for some reason the SeeYa’s and EL-X’s keep my feet warmer for winter walking. It was 27f and I walked/ran 2 miles and my feet are warm without socks. I love them and can’t stop looking at my feet, lmao
Love the look of the EL-X; however, the heel proved to be too sloppy for me. I wore them around the house for several hours and I just can’t see myself getting used to it. Perhaps its just because I’m so used to the “stuctured” heel of my Bikila LS. Either way, the EL-X heel appears to be an issue for many people. I exchanged mine for the new light grey / black, Komodosport LS.

@joe earnshaw – I’m glad to see the EL-X, too. Even not having ever owned a pair of classics, the direction FiveFingers was going had been worrying me. It’s nice to see them get back to basics.
@koffeekev – Interesting. I’ve yet to have a pair of FiveFingers that kept my feet truly warm in freezing weather, but then again I’m really tall and have terrible circulation in my feet. My toes are cold in wool socks in 40 degree weather.
@AlmostEuro – The heel has indeed gotten a lot of comments. Although my issue is the opposite: I feel like the SeeYa heel is even slimmer and less structured, which is what I’m used to. I’d like to see the EL-X get more of a barely-there SeeYa heel. But good choice ont he Komodo Sport LS. Love those.
When I saw these come out and read the reviews, I was very excited… That was until I realized that they fall into the same category as many new VFFs. The no longer carry the smaller sizes. The start at 40 and I wear a 38 – 39. Sadly there is no woman’s alternative in this model.
I am new to Vibrams, but I’ve had my Komodo Sports for around 4 months and I absolutely love them. I wear them everyday at the gym, both running and lifting, but I’m nowhere near the fitness level of Crossfit. I enjoyed reading about the EL-X and will look into purchasing a pair once my Komodo’s bite the dust.
I wonder if anyone has input on how well these would stay put for indoor bouldering (rock wall climbing w/o rope). I currently wear my KSOs which are falling apart (from running on the beach for several month) and I’m in desperate need of a new pair. My two main concerns for a new VFF: minimalist shoe and they’ll stay on tight. I’d easily pick up a Ten if I was confident the slip-ons would stay-on.
I figured some of the movements of cross-fit can be a good barometer, but I wanted to ask directly.
I think Fivefingers may be good shoes for running, but you might as well do Crossfit propertly barefoot as its an indoor activity. I find this works best anyway.
